Do you know how to act and react to the signs of a heart attack to save the life of a loved one?

Heart disease is still the leading cause of death for men and women throughout the world. It’s a life-threatening mistake to assume that you are not at risk for a heart attack.

  • If bystander CPR is not provided, a sudden cardiac arrest victim’s chances of survival fall 7 percent to 10 percent for every minute of delay until defibrillation. Few attempts at resuscitation are successful if CPR and defibrillation are not provided within minutes of collapse.

  • Statistics show that African-Americans and Hispanics/Latinos have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease than Caucasians and are less aware of their cardiovascular risk factors
  • Research studies reveal that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for African-American males and females age 20 and older.

  • Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after cardiac arrest, can double a victim’s chance of survival.

  • About 75 percent to 80 percent of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home, so being trained to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can mean the difference between life and death for a loved one.

  • Most heart attack victims have no warning symptoms before their heart attack.

  • One in four heart attack victims have normal cholesterol levels.

  • One in three heart attacks are fatal within the first hour.
  • Millions of unsuspecting, “healthy” people are at high risk for heart attacks with undiagnosed cardiac risk factors.
  • Additional facts and information can be found at www.americanheart.org

  Children and Infants:
Whenever CPR is needed, remember to call 911,  Current CPR courses teach you that if you are alone with an unresponsive infant or child, give chest compressions for 5 cycles (about 2 minutes) before calling for help.
